He took to wearing long sleeves even in July, as if covering his arms might make him less visible. Once, after Reverend Coley’s sermon on brotherhood, I caught Cash scrubbing his forearms with a Brillo pad behind the church pump, the water running pink in the gravel. When I shouted, he just grinned his jagged grin and said, “Ain’t no sin in wanting to match your friends.”
