By twelve, the world had started carving its rules into him. The white kids from across the tracks called him “railroad trash” when he biked too close to their manicured lawns, while some of the old men on our side would spit in the dust when he walked by, as if his very existence was a trick they hadn’t agreed to. Cash learned to move through spaces like a shadow—present but unremarked upon, his whiteness both armor and target. He took to wearing long sleeves even in July, as if covering his arms might make him less visible. Once, after Reverend Coley’s sermon on brotherhood, I caught Cash scrubbing his forearms with a Brillo pad behind the church pump, the water running pink in the gravel. When I shouted, he just grinned his jagged grin and said, “Ain’t no sin in wanting to match your friends.”
