The Uber hit a pothole, jostling her sideways. Outside, a billboard for a luxury condo development loomed over the street, the tagline screaming ELEVATE YOUR LIVING in glowing letters. Jen pressed her forehead to the glass. Elevate this, she muttered under her breath.
Jen groaned into her hands, pressing her palms hard enough against her eyelids to see bursts of color. Girl, you delusional, she muttered to the empty backseat of the Uber. The fantasy had been stupid—no, pathetic—the kind of shit she’d roll her eyes at if she saw it in a movie. Yeah, right. Like some homeless man gonna turn into Idris Elba just ‘cause you handed him a bar of soap.
The car slowed at a red light, and Jen caught her own reflection in the window—lips pressed thin, mascara smudged beneath one eye. She looked like a woman who’d spent too long staring at a mirage. Snap out of it, she hissed under her breath, digging her nails into her thighs. Marcus wasn’t some diamond in the rough. He was a man who smelled like stale sweat and defeat, sitting on a milk crate like it was a throne. And she? She was Jenelle fucking Carter, a woman who paid her own bills and didn’t need to play Pygmalion to feel important.
